Demetria C. Bongga finished a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics degree major in Nutrition (1962) as well as a Master of Science in Food and Nutrition (1968), both from the University of the Philippines-College of Home Economics in Diliman, Quezon City. She also completed a one-year dietetic internship at UP-PGH (1963), obtained a Diploma in an International Course on Food Science and Nutrition from the Netherlands (1973) and then went on to earn a Ph. D. in International Nutrition from Cornell University in New York, USA (1982).
Dr. Bongga has served in the University of the Philippines- Diliman in various capacities – she was a former Chair of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, former College Secretary, former Dean of the College of Home Economics, and first Vice Chancellor for Research and Development, all positions held concurrently as faculty of Nutrition.
She is currently a Senior consultant of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on Early Warning System (EWS) for Food and Nutrition Security first piloted in Camarines Sur under the Millenium Development Goals-Joint Program of the UN. This prototype EWS is now being replicated in other selected municipalities of the country by FAO and the National Nutrition Council with support from UNICEF, and the World Food Program.
