Ani ng Bayan: Showcasing Filipino Heritage and Sustainable Living at the UP Diliman Lantern Parade 2024

The College of Home Economics (CHE) proudly presented its lantern, Ani ng Bayan (Harvest of the Nation), during the UP Diliman Lantern Parade on December 18, 2024. This year’s lantern reflects the dedication, creativity, and perseverance of the committee led by the Department of Home Economics Education (DHEEd).

Inspired by the theme “Nilay at Sikhay” (Reflection and Perseverance), Ani ng Bayan is a tribute to the heritage of heirloom rice farming—a practice deeply rooted in Filipino culture, family well-being, and resourcefulness. It highlights the role of Home Economics in promoting sustainable lifestyles and fostering community resilience.

The lantern aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Its centerpiece, illuminated grains of heirloom rice, symbolizes nourishment, sustainability, and the collective effort needed to create a balanced and thriving community.

This lantern would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of the CHE faculty, staff, and students, who worked tirelessly from conceptualization to completion. Their dedication and teamwork ensured that the lantern not only embodied the theme of reflection and perseverance but also stood as a shining example of the values upheld in Home Economics.

Each element of Ani ng Bayan was thoughtfully crafted to showcase how Home Economics empowers individuals through lessons in resource management, nutrition, family life, interior design, and sustainable living. The lantern is not only a celebration of Filipino heritage but also a call to action—to reflect on our roots, honor generational knowledge, and commit to practices that support well-being and environmental stewardship.

As the CHE community looks to the future, Ani ng Bayan serves as a reminder of the power of collaboration, reflection, and sustainability in creating a better tomorrow. The faculty, staff, and students of CHE have once again demonstrated their commitment to innovation, heritage, and community, making this lantern a true labor of love and unity.
